About KF4ZMT

E-mail Print

Before becoming a Ham, KF4ZMT was Eddie Lawrence. As we all know, when an new Amateur receives their FCC call sign, their identities are forever changed. It seems that Hams give up their last names and replace it with their call sign. So, in Ham radio circles, he is now Eddie KF4ZMT. Think about it, you probably can't think of your Ham friends last names, but you know their call sign!

Eddie grew up in grid square EM77sj spending a lot of time on the family dairy farm in grid EM77sh. Eddie got his start in the technical arena in a High School electronics program. While in electronics class, across the hall he spied a lovely young lass named Melinda with beautiful red hair who later became his bride.

Pretty soon along came two little harmonics (actually we aren't sure if they are harmonics or sum and difference frequencies, but I digress). The first harmonic was named Stephanie. The second harmonic is Stacie.

In the midst of all this, Eddie left the grid squares where he had spent his youth having volunteered for service in the US Army as a 35H Calibration Specialist (PMEL for all you Air Force types). He spent a few years in the land of DX in such far away places as South Carolina, Colorado, South Korea and Maryland.

After the Army, he found work in Information Technology playing with computers, servers, Ethernet switches, routers, VoIP, wireless networking and many other technolgies which spoke to his inner geek. His IT career again led him to many adventures in the far away and mysterious lands of DX where he has traveled nationally and internationally.

In 1998, he was anointed by the FCC to be a radio amateur. The FCC bestowed upon him the blessings, privileges and responsibilities that go with his call sign: KF4ZMT. He now operates contentedly from his home QTH of Richmond, Kentucky where he also enjoys other technical and scientific pursuits such as amateur astronomy. Second harmonic Stacie has joined the ranks of radio amateurs as KI4IAG. Together they continue in their efforts to convince Melinda and first harmonic Stephanie to join the happy bands of Ham radio operators by acquiring a license and call sign of their own.
